Are You There Judy? It’s Me, Meg
My mom and many of my friends were super excited to get a letter in their inboxes from Judy Blume the other day.
It looked like this (only it had their names where this says “Friend.” For my mom’s the subject line said “Are you there Barb? It’s me, Judy”):
I didn’t know anything about this, though. I was all, “I haven’t seen Judy Blume in a while.” (She lives a few blocks away from me here in Key West.) “It’s my turn to ask her to dinner.”
So I emailed her and was all, “Judy, do you and George want to get together for dinner before you leave?” because she goes to Martha’s Vineyard every summer.
And then I got this email back from Judy:
Love to see you both if you’re up for it. How about next week? Dinner any night.
I’m getting zillions of e-mails today because I sent out an e-mail letter for Planned Parenthood which went out yesterday.
Yes. This was happening.
Planned Parenthood is an organization that helps women who can’t afford it get help with family planning. I should know….
I used to work there!
In the 80s when I was in college I did an internship at Planned Parenthood in Bloomington, Indiana, drawing pamphlets for illiterate and non-English speaking women in order to help them use their birth control correctly.
Hey, if you can’t read (or read English) how can you understand the fine details on your birth control? You CAN’T!
So Planned Parenthood in Monroe County needed someone to draw pamphlets for every method of birth control, down to the finest detail (and I mean FINEST. Have you ever tried to draw Wait eight hours before you take your diaphragm out after having sex? No? Well, it’s REALLY hard).
Planned Parenthood is an incredible organization. They really care about women’s health, and about preventing unwanted pregnancies before they happen.
And Judy is trying to help them do that.
And if you are really pro-life, wouldn’t you want to help them do that, too? Help people not get pregnant in the first place? Well, that’s what Planned Parenthood is all about!
So support Judy, and support Planned Parenthood, by donating to Planned Parenthood this Mother’s Day.
I really wish I had some of those pamphlets I drew. I bet they’d be hilarious now!
