Meg's Diary

EXCELLENT MAIL

I spend so much time in the blog dwelling on my crummy mail, I figured it was time to post some of the sweet, touching, informative, and hilarious letters I get, as well. You know, equal time, and all of that.

Obviously, I didn't post any of the senders names/email addresses, since I'm sure they wish to remain anonymous–some for their own protection, as you will see in the last letter. And I edited a few for length, since I wanted to fit in as many as possible.

By the way, I believe we have enough public confirmation of Suzanne Whang's cyborg potential to officially call her a robot.

Also, Kelly Clarkson officially rocks.

So here goes:

RE: My Super Sweet Sixteen
I am so with you. I talk to rich people EVERY DAY (I'm an accountant) who don't know a thing about money. So when I hear about these teenagers who are spending four times my salary on parties to celebrate something that really doesn't even matter, well, I tend to get a little upset about it, too. I wish Super Nanny would come to these parents and be like, “Okay, instead of spending $200,000 on Ava's Sweet Sixteen party, why don't we just roll that into a tax-deductable Roth IRA?” Because she'll need it if she marries rich and gets eaten alive by the divorce lawyer in later years.

I just thought I would write to tell you that I totally agree with you on the whole Suzanne Whang thing. Yes, I am 16 years old and I admit, I watch House Hunters, (along with a couple of other HGTV shows.. I mean ahem.. what? I've been forced to by my older sister and mother..). The thing is Suzanne Whang's perfection annoys me.

It's just EVERYTIME the show begins she's like “I'm Suzanne Whang,” and she shakes her shoulders the same way and it just kills me.

Oh and about Kelly Clarkson, she's pretty cool, she's got a tatoo and a nose ring.. not that these are things all people find cool, I'm just saying, she's really not as goody-goody as people seem to think she is, but she's not a bitch either.

I was reading your diary and I just wanted to offer my support as someone who lived in La Jolla the last three years. I went to college there at the University of California San Diego. I applaud you telling them what to do with their money. Would you mind asking them to spend it to fix the very pothole ridden streets (Multi million dollar mansions next to huge holes in the street! What is that?) and to open an eating establishment that is open past 10pm. The poor college students of La Jolla would appreciate it!

My mom watches House Hunters all the time. Now I will never be able to turn on HGTV without laughing. You are right! I never noticed it before but Whang does look kind of robotic. She hardly ever moves her arms and her mouth is stuck in the same fake smile position everyday. Wow.

Meg, I know you love Cole on Charmed…So do I! I read on a reputable site, www.thecharmedones.com, that Julian Mcmahon will be back as Cole Turner for episode 150!

Cross your fingers and keep up the good work!!

I stumbled across your blog the other day, and I wanted to say, thank you for being a 30-something obsessed with teen dramas and MTV. As an almost-30-something who is similarly obsessed, you make me feel a lot better (or more normal, at any rate). After all, who but someone who is no longer 16 can appreciate just how absurd those sweet-16 blowouts are? What are these girls' weddings going to look like if they continue on this same trajectory?

I don't know what I'd do if I didn't know what happened on Degrassi! Here's a link to the TVtome episode guide. https://www.tvtome.com/DegrassiTheNextGeneration/season4.html
It's not totally thorough, but it's better than nothing 🙂

Oh my gosh! You so are NOT old! My mom is like, OVER
FIVE years OLDER than you. Okay? Make you feel any
better about being 38? I hope so.

Dear Meg,

I think you ROCK for boycotting Valentine's Day!!!!!! I think it's a stupid holiday that is overrated. My BFF is a valentine FREAK. I just don't understand it. It's the same way with all of the popular jockettes (we don't have cheerleaders so the jockettes rule my class. sadly) they and their boyfriends go all mushy. It's sick.

My family is a bunch of geeks and we watch House Hunters as a family when most of us are home. I totally agree that Suzanna Whang is a robot. Her bangs are just way to perfectly straight across her forehead and her hair is the same EVERY SINGLE episode. Just thought I'd put in my two cents on that one. Have a lovely day!

I just read your latest journal entry and I just
wanted you to know that my best friend and I will
GLADLY be boycotting V-Day along with you. Our school
has this moronic tradition of having girls wear paper
hearts all day. When you have your heart, you can't
talk to any guys. If you do, they take the heart away
from you. Every year I find someone crying or someone
feeling stupid either because they did lose their
heart, or because they didn't. So this year, my best
friend and I are throwing our hearts away. How's that
for a boycott?

I just wanted to write and tell you how excited I am that you got Kelly Clarkson's album…even if it was an accident. Because it's one of my favorites….she's such an awesome singer!!! Besides that, she's a really cool girl, who says dorky things like “Cool beans!” on national television, which is really fun to see.

And I really liked the BMX girl on MADE, becasue I could relate to her, seeing as she was such a girlie girl…and I thought it was good that she finally realized that that boy, Lance, was a jerk, and got over him.

Well…I guess that's it…:)

I see in your blog that you are once again boycotting the holiday, Valentine's Day. But what I have found with most people who appose this holiday, and in fact most people who DO celebrate this holiday, is that they don't realize that St. Valentine's Day is catholic holiday that has been commercialized by the masses. Even though it has been taken out of the official Catholic calendar (I'm guessing due to its commercialization), it is still rooted to Catholicism. I think that you probably knew that but many of your readers don't. I don't know why this particular Saint (along with St. Patrick of Ireland) has been commercialized.

Ok, enough with the technical talk, my point is, are you boycotting the commercialization of Valentine's Day or the day all together? I don't know what religion you are (and honestly, I don't really care) but I want to know if you are boycotting it for the reason I am or not. Yes, I am boycotting it, but that's mainly because at my tender age of 13 romance is entirely insignificant (also, I don't really have any positive comments towards ANY of the dudes at my school) and I am boycotting it because of all the commercialization and the like. SO, have a happy non-commercialized Feast of Saint Val
entine!

I'm a 21 year-old Canadian, who just discovered the diary on your site. I had to laugh, mainly because I am also a fellow catch-all. My friends have started calling me “The Canary”, after the fact that miners used to send a canary down into the mines to see if the air was good – if it wasn't, the canary would die, if it was, the canary would be fine. Over the past year I have had a simultaneous ear/sinus/throat infection, pneumonia, bronchitis, appendicitis, mononucleosis, croup, and I am currently suffering from double pneumonia as well as the flu. So I understand where you are coming from!

I also boycott Valentine's Day, preferring to call it “Singles Awareness Day”. My single friends and I celebrate by having dinner, complaining about the inability of men to commit, followed by a movie (and chocolate and ice cream) like Chicago where the wives lose it and shoot their husbands (or lovers), and finally discuss how much fun it would be to mace all the people we run across who are slobbering all over one another in public. Not that I'd actually do that of course, I am a very calm and happy person.

Meg,
There are indeed “moms” who are strangely intrigued by the Sweet Sixteen episode in question. In fact, there are plenty of moms who are interested in many of the same things you are! We just have to keep it under wraps for the protection of our children. I mean the most embarrassing thing for a teen to have would be a “cool” mom. I had to drive my sixteen-year-old's car the other day–here I was all alone and grooving to his CD, his music–he would have been mortified at the sight! I would never act that way in front of him–it would ruin him for life! And by the way, even though we are fairly well-to-do, my son's car is a $1,500 Civic with rust spots. Ava's parents got her a Range Rover? That's nuts…

A mom (age 42!)

Good stuff, right? I am really lucky I have so many awesome readers. Thanks, you guys, for your GREAT emails and letters. I got LOTS more nice mail, but there's not enough room to post it all here. Please know, though, that I really appreciate it, even if I don't write back due to having to finish two revisions by March 1, and not having started either one yet.

So THANK YOU!

And the Valentine's Day boycott (yes, I am boycotting because of its commercialism, but mostly because of the way people try to make you feel bad if you didn't get roses, a Whitman sampler, or some “lab created” diamonds from Kay's Jewelers, NOT because I am against St. Valentine, who by all reports was a righteous dude) is still on!

Read last year's diatribe (and call to action) about Valentine's here (scroll down to the February 11th entry) for details on how you too can join in (or just do what some of the readers above suggested).

And stay tuned for the next blog entry: The Official Princess Diaries 6 Excerpt for those of you who haven't been able to download it here (PS They are working on that)!

More later.

Much love,

Meg
