OOPS! Plan B, Emergency Contraception

Aliza, 17 Years Old

Choice Matters, Inc is a non-profit organization that advocates for reproductive rights. They have a online blog called OOPS! Plan B and it's all about emergency contraception. It's at www.oops-planb.com

In the site, we're trying to teach young people about emergency contraception (also known as "Plan B") which are kinds of birth control pills that are taken after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. We want let people know that it's not an abortion, and won't work if you are already pregnant. We think that if more people knew about EC, abortions and teen pregnancy would be reduced.

One of the best parts about the site is that it helps you to not be embarrassed talking about this topic. They have stories written by real people about situations in which they have used Plan B. Once you read about other people, you feel better knowing there are others out there who have the same problems.

I help out on the site by researching various issues to be blogged about. For instance, did you know that only 9 states are required to give Plan B to rape victims in the emergancy room? Or that you can get Plan B from a pharmacy without a perscription if you are 18 years old or older? And a new study widely reported in US newspapers on December 6 has shown that the rate of teen pregnancies is going up for the first time in 17 years, which many researchers and educators feel is a result of Bush-mandated abstinence-only education programs.

I also help out by working on the Facebook and MySpace accounts. We are trying to get lots of friends so please add us!
