Meg's Diary

Books…and a Tiara Auction!

I can’t believe it. But there’s less than a month until the last Princess Diaries book ever comes out!

Is that even possible?

But widgets don’t lie:

It’s really strange to be approaching the holidays and not have a Princess Diaries book due! This is the first time in over ten years. It’s making me a little sad.

Of course, I have other books due (such as Allie Finkle Book #4), which cheers me up a little.

And I still have Mia’s blog (which she recently updated…check out her thoughts on Booklist’s new review for Ransom My Heart), and of course hilarious emails from all of you (I can’t even tell you how many emails about facial scars I received over the weekend, most of which were hilarious, and many of which were received the same way I got mine, down to the same number of stitches–six).

But it isn’t quite the same. Publishers Weekly interviewed me about my thoughts now that the series is ending. I’m posting a link to the interview here. Hope you enjoy it!

The PW article mentions a little shindig I’m having in New York on January 9, which the New York Public Library (yes, the one in which Carrie almost got married in the Sex and the City movie) is graciously hosting, to celebrate the final book in the series. I just thought now would be a good time to let you know…you’re all invited!

The Switchblade Kittens will not only perform at the event–they’re putting out an actual CD of songs devoted entirely to the Princess Diaries series (and a few of my other books)! It will be available for sale at the event (and, I’m presuming, from their website).

The tiaras which will be unveiled at the event were plain frames which I had made, then asked various celebrities to decorate, any way they pleased! The tiaras will be auctioned off online from January 1-31, and all the money raised from their sales will be given to the New York Public Library to fund their teen programs throughout the city.

Here are some quotes straight from the press release!

“The New York Public Library loves Meg, and we’re thrilled to have her give back to The Library at a time when New York City teens need it the most,” said Jack Martin, Assistant Director for Young Adult Programs at the NYPL. “In this time of economic uncertainty, the library is the perfect place for teens and their families to discover the free educational, artistic and technological resources available to them through their local branch. And tiaras are a fabulous and fun way to get New Yorkers excited about supporting teen programs!”

The New York Public Library’s 87 branches serve a vital role for teenagers in New York City, providing extra help for those struggling in school as well as offering a home to book lovers. Funds from the tiara online auction will go directly to support essential teen programs including homework help and tutoring, book discussion and teen advisory groups and special events such as author visits.

“I’m so grateful to everyone who poured their creativity into decorating the tiaras. They’re so amazing,” said Meg Cabot. “Having spent a large part of my teen years at my local library, I know firsthand how libraries can transform lives. I hope the tiara auction will enable the library branches to offer more programs and services to teens, especially as they’re needed now more than ever.”

So even if you can’t come to the NYPL event, you’ll have a chance to own a little princess glitz and glamour (and the money will go to an excellent cause)! Some of the generous people who donated their time and creativity to decorate tiaras include:

Julie Andrews (yes! Grandmére herself!)
Designer Vera Wang
Designer Tommy Hilfiger
Goosebumps Author R.L. Stine (his tiara is VERY scary!)
Lauren Conrad (yes…of The Hills!)
Stacy London (of one my favorite shows, What Not To Wear!)
Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece (a real princess!!!!!)
Author Sarah Dessen
Actress Julianne Moore
Cosmetics founder Bobbi Brown

…and many more, each more fabulous than the next….

…but you won’t get anymore names out of me until the auction website is fully functional. (We all need something to look forward to.)

Meanwhile, here is just a small sampling of what you’ll be able to bid on:

Tiara by Austin Scarlett of Project Runway

Tiara by Dylan’s Candy Bar (yummm)

…and even one by me!

So mark your calendar, and get ready: The tiaras are coming!

And soon you’ll be able to own one (or more) yourself (or buy one for a loved one), with the money going to a very good cause.

And lastly:

What makes the best stocking stuffer this Christmas?

Books, of course (the tiaras won’t be auctioned off in time for Christmas, and besides, they’re much too delicate to be put in a stocking)!

More later.

Much love,

Meg
